What to Expect During Your First Reiki Session: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you're considering trying Reiki for the first time, it's natural to wonder what the experience will be like. Reiki is a gentle, hands-on healing technique focused on promoting relaxation and reducing stress. While every session is unique, there is a typical flow that most follow. Understanding what happens, from your initial consultation to the final moments on the table, can help ease any nerves and make your visit feel more welcoming and comfortable.
In this blog, I'll walk you through what you can expect during an in-person Reiki session at my home studio. Whether you're curious about the physical sensations or the emotional shifts that might arise, this guide will help prepare you for a truly nurturing experience.
Before You Arrive: How to Prepare
Before your session, I encourage you to drink plenty of water and wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you're coming straight from work, you're welcome to change into something more relaxed before settling onto the table. It's also helpful to switch off your mobile phone and remove any smart watches to minimise distractions and help you fully disconnect.
Arriving for Your Healing: Setting the Stage
My Reiki sessions take place in a purpose-built home studio designed to feel peaceful and calm. When you arrive, you'll be greeted at the door and welcomed into a space that has been purposefully prepared to support your relaxation, with soft lighting, soothing music, gentle scents from candles or an oil diffuser, and crystals placed around the room.
My little animal helper Bingo, a white Maltese Shih Tzu, will also be there to greet you with plenty of enthusiasm! His gentle presence adds a comforting touch for many clients, however if you'd prefer he not be part of the session, arrangements will happily be made for him.
The Initial Consultation: Setting Intentions and Understanding Reiki
Your first session runs a little longer than subsequent visits, usually around 1 hour and 15 minutes. This extra time allows us to complete intake forms and cover some important details about Reiki.
It's worth knowing that Reiki is a relaxation and stress reduction technique. It does not replace medical advice or treatment from healthcare professionals, and I do not diagnose or interfere with any existing treatments.
During the consultation we'll also discuss your intentions for the session, and I'll ask you to sign a commitment acknowledging your willingness to approach Reiki as a self-improvement practice.
While a single session can offer real benefits, multiple sessions often bring the most meaningful results. This conversation helps you feel clear and grounded about what Reiki can offer and sets a positive tone for the session.
Preparing for Your Session: Getting Comfortable
Once the paperwork is complete, I'll walk you through how the session will unfold so you feel completely at ease. You'll remain fully clothed throughout with comfort and respect always the highest priority. Bingo will settle into his crate at this point, and you'll be invited to lie down on the Reiki table.
The lighting is adjusted to suit the time of day: dimmed for evening appointments, or with the blinds softly drawn during the day to filter the natural light to a gentle glow. The room is kept at a comfortable temperature and blankets are available in winter to add a little extra cos
iness. Soft Reiki music plays quietly in the background, and with your permission, I'll place a gentle eye pillow over your eyes to encourage your body to relax even further.
These small, considered touches create an environment where you can truly begin to unwind before the healing energy starts to flow.
The Session Begins: Hands-On Healing in Silence
Reiki is performed with a light hands-on touch, though if you prefer no physical contact at all, that is absolutely fine. Once your session begins, I remain silent to preserve the peaceful atmosphere. I'll endeavour to keep contact with your body at all times, so you always know where I am. That continuity helps many clients feel secure and supports a deeper state of relaxation.
Beginning at your head, I gradually move down toward your feet. With prior agreement, many clients also turn over for the last 10 minutes so I can work on their back as well. The full session on the table lasts around 45–50 minutes.
What You Might Experience Physically and Emotionally
Every person's experience with Reiki is unique and each session will feel different as your healing unfolds.
During the session, clients often notice warmth radiating from my hands. Some feel tingling sensations or coolness, while others might experience subtle sounds from their body like gurgling or rumbling, which are natural signs of energy moving and nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, I take them as a wonderful compliment that the healing energy is doing its work
You might find yourself drifting off to sleep and that is completely okay. When that happens, I let you rest fully, because Reiki continues to work even while you sleep. Toward the end of the session, I'll gently bring you back with soft sounds or a light touch.
Once you are off the table, many clients often report feeling calm, rested, refreshed, or lighter. Whatever you experience is valid and relevant to where you are in your healing journey.
Coming Back to Awareness: The Closing Moments
As the session winds down, I slowly bring my focus from head to feet before gently inviting you to turn over if you haven't already. This gradual transition eases you back into full awareness without any sudden jolts.
Once you're comfortably upright and alert, we'll take a few minutes to talk through what you experienced. I'll also share any impressions or messages that came through while I was working with your energy. These insights may resonate with your past, or they could have purpose for the days ahead.
After Your Session: Caring for Yourself
When you leave, I recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush out toxins and support your body's natural healing processes. Rest if you feel the need or take a short walk. Whatever feels right for you, is what’s best.
Remember, Reiki is best experienced as an ongoing practice. Each session gently builds on the last one, as your mind and body learn how to respond in the same environment.
Embracing Your First Reiki Experience
Your first Reiki session is an invitation to slow down, be still, and allow yourself to simply receive. From the moment you arrive at my treatment room to the quiet closing moments on the table, every part of the experience is designed with your comfort and wellbeing in mind.
Whether you're seeking stress relief, hormonal balance, physical comfort, or simply a moment of peace, Reiki welcomes you exactly as you are.
If you have any questions before booking, or want to talk through any concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to support your healing journey, every step of the way.
